African cichlids come from the three great lakes in Africa (Victoria, Tanganyika and Malawi). These lakes contain more species of fish than any other lake in the world. African cichlids are pretty intelligent fishes and very hardy and easy to keep. The water in your aquarium should be hard alkaline water. If you have neutral water in your tap there are some home remedies that will take care of it. African cichlids tolerate a wide range of pH levels which make them even easier to care for.
Many people wonder what size you can get the African cichlids in. Some can actually get really big. 4-6 inches is pretty common and some of the “Haps” can get up to 9 inches, but they are rare to find for sale. Sure these big African cichlids cost more than a little tetra but you get a lot more fish for you money if you buy cichlids. If you want a smaller African cichlid, there are a few dwarf-sized species. These can be held in smaller tanks which is good for people who don’t have that much space.
African cichlids are loved and adored for their beautiful coloration. They have been living in their lakes isolated and evolving into unique fishes with beautiful colors. Don’t let the beautiful colors fool you though; the African cichlid is an aggressive fish. It shouldn’t be kept with other species of fish. Newly introduced smaller cichlids can sometimes get attacked by the bigger cichlids if there are no open territories available. A big fish tank is recommended for most African cichlids to give them space for territories. Rocks, caves and platforms are recommended for hiding areas.
Another good thing about African cichlids is that most species are very easy to breed (especially those from Lake Malawi). Not only are they easy to breed but very fascinating to watch their method of courting and care for the eggs and youngsters.
You should feed your African cichlids a vegetation rich food. It could be supplements of lettuce, spinach and peas which you just cut it in small pieces and feed it slowly. Don’t overfeed or the water might turn bad. A variation in their diet is important. We have some of the most famous cichlids food in the right sidebar.
