African Peacock Cichlids
The beautiful African Peacock Cichlids can naturally be found in the Malawi Lake. They are known for their very bright and beautiful coloration. There are 28 species and many subspecies in all kinds of colors. They like intermediate zones with sand and rocks. In the wild they eat micro invertebrates that they find on rocks and in the sand. Other common names of the African Peacock Cichlids are Blue Peacock, Red Peacock and Aulonocara hansbaenschi. It will grow to a maximum size of 7 inches and live for up to 12 years. The males are brightly colored even as juveniles and bigger while the females stay grey colored and smaller sized.
Aquarium:
In the aquarium the African Peacock Cichlids are mostly peaceful, but still territorial. You can combine it with other medium sized cichlids. Just make sure they have room to hide. The smallest tank size for holding a few Peacock Cichlids is 40 gallons. You should at least have some rocks and caves in it, but still provide some open areas along the bottom. Keep one male with several females (4-5).

Feeding:
Feed the African Peacock Cichlids quality cichlid flake or pellet food. Now and then you can give it frozen krill or brine.
Breeding:
African Peacock Cichlids are mouth brooders that form a matriarch family. A pair must be conditioned separately. Feed them mosquito larvae and bloodworms. Try to hold a pH from 8.0-8.2 and hardness 10-18 dH. Make sure to increase the temperature to around 79-84F. The female will lay a small amount of eggs on the rocky bottom while the male will fertilize them. Feed the young cichlids fine grade flake food.
