Nimbochromis Venustus

Nimbochromis Venustus

Nimbochromis venustus is pretty popular in this hobby. The venustus belongs to the Haplochromine group and is from the Lake Malawi in Africa. The most amazing about this fish is the hunting technique.

In the free the Nimbochromis venustus prefers the deepest parts of the lake with a rocky bottom and where lots of other smaller cichlids can be found. This cichlid is an ambush predator just like its cousin the Nimbochromis livingstonii. When the Nimbochromis venustus are heading out for hunt it will plough into the sand and stay there totally motionless for several minutes if needed. When a prey comes close enough it jumps out of the sand to catch it really fast. This is very unusual and amazing to watch. Some think that the yellow color of this fish is to attract smaller cichlid but it’s not yet proved.
